The vipers were the small trouble, $N. The canebrake constrictors are the big one. They lie up in the thick cane east of the still, as long as a longboat, and they do not bite. They hold. We lost a mule to one last week and very nearly the cutter leading it. Kill eight of them, and the brake is ours again.
