The Mark That Kept Growing
es_silcrow_holm_sagaThe Mark That Kept Growing
Quest · Level 60
Sit by the coil, $N, and let the light not-quite-fade while I tell it. Before the Book was bound, this leaf was not a page at all: it was the mark printed at the top of a new section, the little linked curl the scribes call a silcrow, so a reader always knew where one part of the telling ended and the next began. The Binders cut it away last of all, because a book with no visible seams reads as one unbroken telling, and that was the effect they wanted. The mark did not vanish; it grew, the way a doodle grows if you stare at it long enough, until its two curls became these two cliffs and its dot of ink became the lagoon in each hollow. That is why the light here never finishes falling: a section mark holds a place open, and a place that only holds never moves on to night. The Glossator carved their own note into the rock above the far hollow in the one hour they stayed, and told me, before they left, that they had never once found a section that would say plainly how the whole telling was meant to end.

Completion
So the Binders wanted no seams showing, and left behind one mark that would not stop growing instead. Thank you for reading it back to me, $N; my own eyes have started arguing with the twilight about what they see. The Glossator's note ends with a bearing I have followed on every chart I own: south and higher, to a forest of stems too tall to be trees, holding up the stars themselves. Ascender Spires, the note calls it. No ferry reaches that far out; you will need your own boat and your own two hands on the wheel. Go carefully, and go up.
