Every one of those raiders carries a medallion in its ribs, $N: a black spot on bleached bone. That is the Armada's mark, and it binds a drowned soul to the Armada's articles. Lettice says every spot had a name on it once, scraped off, and if she can read what is left of the scraping she can nail the names back up on the Wall, so somebody remembers who those poor souls were. Bring her eight of them from the raiders on the north beaches.

Give them here. Gently. Look at this one: a name was cut here once, and somebody took a blade to it letter by letter. I can still read the tail of it. Kell. A ship's boy, perhaps. I will copy every scrap and nail them up beside the Common Article. The Armada can scrape a name off bone, $N. It cannot scrape it off the Wall while somebody keeps it there.
