The Salt-Rimed Dead

The topmen on the Dawnwatch cliffs are not ordinary skeletons, $N. They were the Chalk Widow's riggers once, and they still go up rock the way they went up her shrouds. The sea has grown stone over their ribs, and in the middle of each one is a hard, wet core that keeps the whole thing moving. If I can study eight of those Calcified Heart-Cores, I can learn what is turning the dead of this coast to chalk, and whether it can do the same to us.
