The Hundred Leaves ended on a blank page, $N, and the Binders let it end there. But the stone of this coast is written on, in a hand older than the Book itself. The first crew ashore found a stele on the Pelican headland north of town, standing alone over the Sound, and the captains who wrote our articles swear they took their first line from it. Nobody has ever copied what is cut beneath that line. Go and read it for me. Copy every line exactly, even the ones you cannot make sense of. Especially those.

Let me see the rubbing. Yes. That is not the script of the Hundred Leaves, and it is not any hand the Binders used. The captains told the truth: it opens the way a crew's articles open, "No hand writes us but our own." That line is nailed over every door in this port, $N, but the lines beneath it are older than any crew of ours. Whoever cut this stone signed articles here before we came. We are standing in the first chapter of the Second Tome.
