There is a place where I lost the trail, $N, and lost Brae with it. Brae was my companion, a grey wolf who ran beside me for eleven years. We followed the First Antler's sign out along the old Keelroad, and the sea came up over the road while we were still on it. A leviathan rose at the junction, and Brae went into the water between it and me. I never went back. Roadwarden Tess Harrow captains the Dry Watch on the Drowned Crown. Go to her, and walk the road I could not.

Thornstride. The Dry Watch still tells it: a hunter came back along the Keelroad alone one night, soaked to the bone and carrying nothing, and stood at the milestone until morning. I remember the wolf, $N. The leviathans still come up the drowned road to nest beneath the junction, and the asphalt eels run ahead of them like gulls ahead of a storm.
