The Loop That Never Finished Crossing
es_ampersand_isle_sagaThe Loop That Never Finished Crossing
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and I will tell you what Crossfall actually is. Before the Book was bound, one page held two clauses meant to join, the kind of sentence that ties two ideas together with a single joining mark instead of choosing between them. The author drew the join again and again, looping it tighter each time, certain the two halves would finally meet cleanly. They never fully did; the join always left a small gap where the ink had not quite closed the loop. The Binders would not print a joining mark that failed to join, so rather than force the two halves shut themselves, they let the whole page go, and the Ink Tide carried it here, where the two loops still cross at a waterfall and still do not quite finish the join. The Glossator studied the crossing longer than most, $N, and left their own ampersand at Farloop Bend before they went looking for the two clauses it was always meant to hold together.

Completion
That is as near as anyone has read the join. The ampersand points on, the way it always does. Pilcrow Isle lies south of us, or so the mark guesses, black basalt shaped like a paragraph mark on a paper-white shoal. Take your own boat there when you are ready, $N, and tell whoever keeps that mark that Crossfall's join finally found where it was pointing.
