The Mark That Was Never Finished
es_pilcrow_sagaThe Mark That Was Never Finished
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and I will tell you what Duskmark actually is. Before the Book was bound, one page held a single pilcrow, the mark a writer sets down to promise a new paragraph before they have decided what it says. The author set it down early and often, always meaning to come back and fill the paragraph it promised, and never quite doing it before the page moved on. By the time the Binders received it, the mark stood alone with nothing following it, a promise with no paragraph. They would not print a promise that led nowhere, so they let the page go rather than write the paragraph for the author, and the Ink Tide carried it here, where the mark still stands unfinished, black basalt on a shoal as pale as the page it was cut from. The wights and shades you have been putting down are the paragraph's own unwritten drafts, $N, still waiting for whatever was supposed to follow. The Glossator studied the mark longer than most and left their own pilcrow at the Last Mark before they went looking for the paragraph it was always meant to introduce.

Completion
That is as complete a reading as this mark will ever get. The pilcrow points on, the way it always does. Pied Type Isles lie southeast of us, or so the mark guesses, a scatter of mismatched letterforms that never learned to set in one line. Take your own boat there when you are ready, $N, and tell whoever keeps those letters that Duskmark's mark finally found the paragraph it was promising.
