A Shape Short of a Story
es_asterism_holms_sagaA Shape Short of a Story
Quest · Level 60
Stand with me at the Sixfold Drift, $N, where the snow always settles in the same six-pointed pattern, and let me tell you what this leaf was. It was a page of names for the sky: an asterism, the Binders' own word for a grouping of stars that catches the eye but never rises to a full constellation, a shape too small and too plain to earn its own myth. The Binders cut every unpromoted asterism from the star-chart chapter, because a chart crowded with minor shapes reads as clutter, and they wanted the heavens to look considered. The cut page did not lie down and stay a page. It broke into these three star-shaped points and let the sea between them stand for the dark between real stars, and the snow, having nowhere else to fall, learned to land in the same six-fold pattern the asterism itself once traced across the chart. The Glossator stood exactly where you are standing and pressed their mark into the drift, and it has not melted since, and they told me that a shape without a story is still a shape, and worth marking down all the same.

Completion
A shape without a story, marked down anyway. That is the kindest thing anyone has said about this place in all my years of naming its drifts, $N, and I mean to hold onto it. The mark points on across colder water still, to a spiral of white cliffs coiling down to a centre the snow has never once disturbed: Volute Isle. No ferry sails that far; only your own boat, and a steadier hand on the ice than most of mine have left.
