The Centre Left Blank

Quest · Level 60

Stand with me at the Unmarked Heart, $N, where the snow has never once taken a footprint before yours, and let me tell you what leaf this was. Before the Book was bound, chapters ended with a flourish: a spiral of extra ink the scribes let their pen run out in, an ornament with no letters in it, curling in on itself around the space where an illuminator was meant to drop a painted initial for the next chapter. The Binders cut every flourish they found, calling it decoration that told the reader nothing, and this one leaf held the largest flourish in the whole Book, a spiral so wide the illuminator had never gotten around to painting the letter it curled around. The cut leaf drifted here and grew into these ice-bright coils, spiraling inward exactly as the ink once did, and the space at the centre stayed exactly as empty as the illuminator left it: no letter, no ink, nothing but clean snow that has never taken a mark. The Glossator found that emptiness and did not fill it either. They only pressed one print into the snow beside it, so that anyone reading this island afterward would know someone had stood here and chosen, deliberately, to leave the true centre exactly as blank as they found it.

Completion

Nobody has filled that centre in all the years I have watched it, and now I understand it is not waiting to be filled at all. Thank you for standing witness to that with me, $N; some things need a second person before they are quite real. The print beside the blank space points on, past colder coils than these, to an island cut clean through by a canyon and folded open like the two halves of a page, a hidden landscape painted on its inner walls. Gatefold Isle, the mark calls it. No ferry crosses that stretch of water; only your own boat, and the same steady nerve that carried you to the middle of this spiral.
