A Word That Never Arrived
es_bracket_holm_sagaA Word That Never Arrived
Quest · Level 60
Stand with me at the Empty Elbow, $N, where the two long walls of grey cliff meet at a hard right angle and neither one says anything at all. This leaf was never a finished sentence: it was a bracket, the mark an editor leaves open around a word the author promised but never sent, holding a space exactly the shape and size of whatever was supposed to go there. The Binders waited as long as they could for the missing word, because a Book with an empty bracket in it looks unfinished, and an unfinished Book cannot be bound and called complete. When the word never came, they cut the bracket out rather than let one gap embarrass every finished page around it. The cut leaf drifted here and opened into these two right-angled walls, enclosing a bay that faces east, toward wherever the missing word might still be coming from, and it is still waiting, because a bracket does not close itself; someone has to write the word and close it from outside. The Glossator stood right here and told me they did not have the word either, only the shape of the space it was going to fill, and that a space kept open on purpose is not the same as a space simply left behind.

Completion
A space kept open on purpose, still waiting for a word that may never arrive, and somehow more patient for it. I registered this whole island as unfinished business the day I arrived, $N, and you have just made me reconsider what unfinished actually means out here. The bearing past the Elbow points to two long ridges meeting at one sharp summit, like the small mark a scribe inserts to show exactly where a missing word belongs: Caret Crag. No ferry sails this stretch; only your own boat, and the willingness to go looking for whatever word this whole reach has been waiting to insert.
