A Passage Never Decided

Quest · Level 60

Sit with me at the West Shoal, $N, where the water lies so still it holds its breath, and let me tell you what mark this leaf carried. Long before the Book was bound whole, an editor found one passage they could not decide about: not wrong enough to cut, not right enough to keep without comment, so they drew an obelus beside it, the small dagger-mark scholars have used since before there were binders at all to say I am not sure about this. The Binders inherited the doubt along with the passage and never resolved it either way, so when the final cut came, they did the only honest thing left: they cut the passage out complete, obelus and all, rather than pretend a decision had been made. The cut leaf became this bar of pale sand, and the obelus itself split into the two round islets you can see floating above and below it, marking the doubtful passage from a discreet distance the way the mark always did on the page. The water between holds so still because doubt, once it finally lands somewhere, has nothing left to argue about. The Glossator sat exactly here and told me the passage was neither wrong nor right; it was simply unfinished, and unfinished things deserve a place to wait rather than a verdict.

Completion

Neither wrong nor right, just unfinished, waiting for a verdict that never had to come. I have sat with a great many doubtful passages in my career, $N, and none of them ever settled so peacefully as this one. The mark left one more bearing, toward a square bay of grey cliffs cut at hard right angles, open only to the east, like a bracket waiting for words that were never supplied: Bracket Holm. No ferry crosses this stretch of water; only your own boat, and the patience to let another unfinished thing stay exactly that, at least for now.
