The Sentence That Hangs Below the Line
es_descender_spires_sagaThe Sentence That Hangs Below the Line
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and let me tell you what Undercurl actually is. Before the Book was bound, one page held a line of letters that hung below the rest, the kind with tails: a word about roots, or falling, or reaching down for something the sentence above it could not name. The Binders' presses are built for letters that sit neatly on the line, and a whole page of hanging tails jammed the type every time they tried to set it. Rather than trim the tails off and lose the word entirely, they cut the page loose, and the Ink Tide carried it here, where every spire still hooks back down at the tip like a letter trying to finish its own descent. We build hanging gardens on every curl because it is the one shape this island knows how to grow into, $N; I have written that down more carefully than the Glossator managed, though they came closer to guessing what the word was. They left their own hook out at Farhook before they went looking for the rest of the sentence.

Completion
That is as close as I have come to the truth of it. The hook points on the way it always does. Dagger Cay lies north of us, a long blade of red rock the note calls the sharpest point in the whole sea. Take your own boat there when you are ready, $N, and tell whoever keeps that cay that Undercurl finally finished its own sentence.
