A Scraped Margin
es_erasure_flats_sagaA Scraped Margin
Quest · Level 60
Sit a moment on dry crust, $N, if you can find any that has not been written on twice. Every other leaf the Binders cut away kept its words when it drifted east, but not this one. This leaf frightened them enough that cutting it loose was not punishment enough, so before they let the Ink Tide take it, they scraped it blank, every letter, right down to the fiber. They did not count on salt. The crust remembers what the page forgot, and every low tide it tries, badly, to write the sentence back. The Glossator read what little the crust could manage and left no answer here, only a question scratched into the Dome where the writing runs deepest: what was worth erasing this thoroughly. I have not found one yet, and I am not sure I want to.

You found their question, then. I have read it a hundred times and it still does not answer itself: what was worth erasing this thoroughly. The Glossator did not linger to work it out either. Whatever came next in the trail lies further south, past our shore: Bleedthrough Shoal, where the marks are said to rise up through the sand instead of the salt. No ferry runs out this far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so chart your course south and go. If the shoal answers the Dome's question, come back and scrape it into the crust for me.
