The Page That Buried Itself
es_hieratic_cone_sagaThe Page That Buried Itself
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and hear about the one leaf on this trail that nobody erased on purpose. Every other page the Binders lost was lost to someone: torn out, ringed off, struck through, corrected by a later hand. This one buried itself. The vent went quiet the same season the ink dried, and the ash that followed did not stop falling until every carved word on the cone was under a foot of grey powder, the page and its own gravestone in the same motion. The Glossator dug for a full season before finding a single readable line, and what they found was not a warning or a lament, only an ordinary sentence cut off mid-stroke, as though the writer had simply stopped, mid-word, and never noticed the ash starting to cover the pen. They called it the only honest ending on the whole trail: not a story about an ending, an ending with no story attached to it at all. They left their own note on the last step still clear of ash, the farthest carved step the slope still lets a boot reach. Go and read what they left at the Last Carved Step, out past the ashen terrace.

Completion
"I no longer think this page was erased," the Glossator writes, in a hand pressed harder into the paper than anywhere else on the trail. "I think it simply stopped being written, and stopping looks identical to erasure from far enough away." Beneath that, the same hand names where they sailed next: The Erasure Flats, further north across the palimpsest_deep, blinding salt pans scraped clean with ghost-writing half visible in the crust. Take your own boat past the Last Carved Step and hold north; the current runs steady that way now. Come back and tell me whether a page that was scraped clean on purpose reads any different from one that was only ever left unfinished.
