A Question Shouted Into Wind

Quest · Level 60

Climb with me to the Hook Tip, $N, where the spire curls back on itself like a hook drawn in one motion, and the gale has never once stopped trying to answer it. This leaf held one sentence, and that sentence was true enough, and strange enough, that whoever set it could not decide whether it ended in a question or a shout. The Binders keep two separate marks for exactly that choice, one curled and one straight, and every leaf in the Hundred Leaves commits to one or the other before it is ever bound. This leaf refused to commit. Rather than let an unmarked sentence stand and risk the reader guessing wrong, the two marks fused into a single hooked spire, curled like the question and straight like the shout, and stood up out of the sea still asking and still shouting at once. The wind has been trying to finish the sentence for it ever since, which is why it never dies down here, not for a season, not for an hour. The Glossator climbed this same hook before you and told me the spire is not confused, not exactly; it is simply the one leaf that told the whole truth about how it felt, and felt two things at once.

Completion

Two things at once, and never resolved, $N, which might be the most honest shape any leaf in this whole reach has taken. I have tried for years to decide whether this spire is asking me something or warning me of something, and you climbing it and coming back down alive has not settled that either way. The bearing past the Hook Tip runs to a perfectly flat white tableland with nothing on it at all, not a stone, not a shadow, only more wind: Tabula Rasa. No ferry crosses this stretch of sea; only your own boat, and whatever nerve carries a sailor from a mark that says everything at once toward a page that has not said anything yet.
