The Lampblack Leaf
es_lampblack_isle_sagaThe Lampblack Leaf
Quest · Level 25
Lampblack, $N, is soot rendered fine enough to write with, and it is what most of the Book's own ink was made of before the Binders ever touched a page. This cone is where that ink came from, or one of the places: a first draft of the very substance the Book is written in, cut and sent east once the Binders found a cleaner soot elsewhere and decided this leaf's own smoke ran too black, too bitter, too much like the mountain it came from. The slope has burned the same way ever since, making the ink nobody wants anymore. A wanderer climbed up some seasons back to watch the kilns work, small tidy hand, called themselves the Glossator, and left their own cinder cooling at the crown of the cone, blacker than anything I have ever rendered. I have studied it as long as I have studied my own kilns and I still cannot read past the first half. Go and look at it for me.

Completion
So even the Glossator's own hand burns down to cinder eventually. It tells my kilns nothing I did not already know, $N, but I know now they stood right at that crown, and that they went on from here toward Vignette Isle, further along this reach of near folios. Take the ferry there and keep reading what they left. I will keep rendering ink nobody wants.
