Ruled Before It Was Written
es_ledger_terraces_sagaRuled Before It Was Written
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and hear the strangest leaf on the whole trail so far. Every other page in this Book was written and then, sometimes, corrected. This one was ruled first: lines drawn straight across the hillside in perfect rows before a single mark was ever set inside them, the way a scribe squares a page before touching ink to it. Nobody the Glossator spoke to could say who ruled the lines or what they meant to fill in, only that the lines came first and held their shape long after whatever was meant to fill them either finished, or failed, or was abandoned partway through. The Glossator called it patience mistaken for meaning, and then crossed that thought out and called it the opposite: meaning so old that only its patience is left standing. They found one row further out that was ruled but never walked, ink-fresh in a way stone should not stay, and left their own note beside it rather than inside it, unwilling to be the mark that finally filled the line. Go and read what they left at the Last Legible Row, out past the waterline where the ground still holds.

Completion
"I have decided the ruling matters more than whatever was meant to go inside it," the Glossator writes, in a hand steadier than I expected from someone this far from home. "A line drawn with enough patience outlasts the reason it was drawn." Beneath that, the same hand names where they sailed next: Hieratic Cone, off to the south across the palimpsest_deep, a worn grey volcanic plug stepped with eroded carvings, its old vent choked with ash and silence. Take your own boat south past the Last Legible Row; the current runs steady that way now. Come back and tell me whether ash keeps a tally any better than an empty terrace does.
