The Glossator's Onionskin
es_onionskin_isle_sagaThe Glossator's Onionskin
Quest · Level 27
Onionskin Isle was never meant to be a whole leaf, $N. It was the flimsy backing sheet a scribe slips behind a page to keep the ink from bleeding through to the one underneath: read constantly, kept constantly, and never once meant to be the thing that gets read. The Binders needed a thousand of it and remembered none of them, and when the real pages were bound this one simply went unused, thin as it had always been. It drifted here and froze into a whole cap of ice, still doing the only job it ever knew: standing between one thing and the next so neither gets marked by the other. Someone read this one anyway, straight through. Climb to the Onionskin Crown and hold what they left up to the light.

So even a backing sheet has something written on it, if you hold it up right. Whoever left that mark read this cap the way I have read it for years: looking for what it was protecting. My own notes say the trail runs on from here, $N, east and much further out, to Manicule Mangroves in the marginal isles, where five dark channels splay like the fingers of a pointing hand. It is a longer crossing than the one that brought you here, but any mainland ferry master can still carry you that far.
