The Temple the Delta Kept Writing Over

Quest · Level 60

Sit, $N, and hear what this delta actually buried. This leaf held the record of a temple, and the Binders did not cut it or strike it through; they simply let the delta itself do the revising, the way silt settles thicker over whatever a river has decided it no longer wants remembered. Season after season, the same brown water laid one more thin layer over the temple's record, until what drifted east was less a leaf than a very slow eraser that never once finished its work. The steps still show, because steps get walked on and stay scoured; the rest is buried under however many years of patient, ordinary silt it takes to bury a whole building. The Glossator came looking for what the temple originally said before the delta started editing it, and found only the same warning repeated on every tablet the water has ever uncovered: a warning that seems to describe the silt itself, still coming, never finished. They left their reading of it at the Slow Water, where the current runs too gentle to ever scour anything clean again. Go and read what they found.

Completion

"The temple did not warn against an enemy. It warned against sediment: against anything that arrives so slowly and so gently that nobody thinks to call it an attack until it is finished." That is the whole of the Glossator's reading, $N, plainer and more frightened than most of what they leave behind. Beneath it, the same hand names where they sailed next: Cartouche Ring, back to the southwest across the palimpsest_deep, an oval crater ring around a still lagoon with one weathered name-stone standing alone at its center. Take your own boat past the Slow Water and hold southwest; the current runs steady and true that way now. Come back and tell me whether a name carved in stone survives any better than a temple buried in silt.
