The Half That Never Landed
es_tornleaf_canyon_sagaThe Half That Never Landed
Quest · Level 60
Sit close, $N, and I will tell you why this island is missing half of itself. This leaf was torn down the middle on purpose, not struck through or scraped clean like the others, but split into two separate pieces the Binders meant to exile apart from each other so neither half could ever be read whole again. Ours drifted here and ran aground. The other half drifted somewhere else, or never landed at all, and the gap between the halves is the actual wound, still there, still twilight-colored at the edges the way a bruise stays dark long after the blow. The Glossator came looking for the other half and did not find it, but they found something better: proof that the two halves are still connected under the water, still one leaf pretending to be two, the way the driftstone keeps washing up here from a place no boat has ever charted. They left their proof at the Farthest Ledge, right at the rim's last safe footing. Go and read what they found.

Completion
"I could not reach the other half, but I no longer believe it is gone. A leaf torn in two is still, underneath, one leaf. I mean to find whatever coastline is still holding the rest of it." That is the Glossator's hand, hopeful in a way none of their other notes have been, $N. Beneath it, the same hand names where they sailed next: Papyrus Delta, further north across the palimpsest_deep, a grey-green delta of rustling reeds with temple steps sinking into slow brown water. Take your own boat past the Farthest Ledge and hold north; the current runs true that way now. Come back and tell me if a delta remembers being whole any better than a canyon remembers being torn.
