The Chapter That Reflects Nothing
es_anathema_caldera_sagaThe Chapter That Reflects Nothing
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and hear the rest. This leaf was a mirror the Book held up to itself, a chapter that showed every reader exactly who they were on the page, flattering or not, and more than one king who read it never forgave what he saw. The Binders could not risk a mirror that honest reaching every hand that opened the Book, so they threw it into the sea rather than burn it, afraid even the ash might still show something true. It ran aground here and hardened into a ring around the reflection it was cut for showing, which is why the water inside it shows nothing at all now: it used up every reflection it had the day it was cut. The Glossator sat at the water's edge for a whole grey season waiting to see their own face, and left their note at the Blind Mirror when the lake finally convinced them it never would. Go and read what patience got them.

Completion
"A mirror that shows nothing is still telling you something. It is telling you it is empty." That is the whole of the reflection, $N, and I have stared at that water a good deal longer since reading it. Below it, in a hand that trails off toward the edge, the Glossator names Sibylline Mesas, a twilight tableland further south along the apocrypha, as the next leaf on their trail. No ferry sails there from here: take your own boat south, and read the stone leaves you find there more carefully than I read this one. Come back and tell an old keeper what they say.
