The Unanswered Leaf

Quest · Level 60

Stand here at the flute's mouth, $N, and listen a moment before I speak over the wind. Before the Book was bound, this leaf held a great antiphon: a call and a response, sung across two choirs the way old liturgies are sung, each answering the other. The call asked who had truly bound the first Book, and the response would have answered it plainly. The Binders judged that answer too dangerous to exist in any voice, even a sung one, so they cut call and response together, the whole leaf, and let the Ink Tide carry it east. It ran aground as this wall of basalt, and the columns still try to sing what they were cut mid-verse from finishing: one rank of pipes still moans the old call when the wind rises, and another rank tries to answer it, but the response never quite becomes words, only that violet light pooling in the flutes where a sentence should be. The Glossator spent a season here matching the call's pipes to the response's, and swore they had nearly completed one full answer at the flute they named the Unfinished Response before they sailed on. Go there and listen to what they matched.

Completion

"[the almost-finished response]" is as far as the Glossator's matching got, marked at the Unfinished Response by their own hand, and it is the closest this cliff has come to answering its own call in longer than anyone can say. Thank you for standing there and listening for me, $N; the wind drowns an old chronicler's ears faster than it used to. Beneath the matching, the Glossator also names the next leaf on the trail: south of us, past this cliff's far shoulder, stands Interdict Citadel, where they say every door was chained shut on purpose. Take your own boat south and see what they were kept from reading. Come back one day, if the wind allows it, and tell an old chronicler whether a chained door ever really keeps a question in.
