The Sealed Leaf
es_interdict_citadel_sagaThe Sealed Leaf
Quest · Level 60
Sit here in the shade of the chained gate, $N, and I will tell you why every door on this crag is locked from the outside. Before the Book was bound, this leaf argued that the first kings were smaller men than their crowns pretended, ordinary and frightened and no more chosen than anyone else. The Binders judged that burning such a leaf would only make it a martyr's relic, remembered exactly because it was destroyed, so instead they built this citadel around it, tier upon tier of sealed libraries, and chained every door rather than let the argument simply vanish. Scribes were set to guard each sealed copy, and when their watch never ended, the citadel simply sealed them in with their work; you can still hear them shelving pages that no one will ever read. The Glossator broke one seal at the highest archive and read enough of the leaf to be certain the argument was never dangerous, only inconvenient, and left their reading marked in the Sealed Archive before the Last Censor drove them back down the tiers. Go up to the Sealed Archive and read what they marked there.

Completion
"[what the Glossator marked]" is the whole of what they left at the Sealed Archive, and it is more of the leaf than this citadel has let anyone read in longer than the chains have held. Thank you for going up after it, $N; the Last Censor let me approach exactly once, and once was enough for a lifetime. Beneath the reading, the Glossator names the next leaf on the trail: north of us, past the Sealed Archive's own shoulder, lie the Sympathetic Springs, where they say the steam itself remembers what is written near it. Take your own boat north and see what the springs recall. Come back one day, if the wardens ever let you leave twice, and tell an old registrar whether the steam remembered anything worth chaining.
