The Disowned Leaf
es_rootscript_mangroves_sagaThe Disowned Leaf
Quest · Level 60
Sit here on the boardwalk, $N, and let the tide go all the way out before I begin. Before the Book was bound, this leaf was the Binders' own register of the disowned: every name struck from a family line so no one could trace a scandal back to its root. They cut the whole leaf away rather than leave one disowned name floating loose in the margins, and let the Ink Tide carry it east. It ran aground as this delta, and the disowned did not simply vanish: they became the roots, and at low tide you can still see their names trying to spell themselves in the mud, one letter at a time, never quite finishing, because a name struck out can never fully come back. The lantern-lights you see drifting after dark are the disowned themselves, still walking the channels, looking for anyone willing to read a name whole. The Glossator spent a season matching root-shapes to old lineage records, and swore they had nearly reconstructed one complete name at the Unnamed Root before they sailed on. Go there and read what they left carved.

Completion
"[the name, nearly whole]" is as far as the Glossator got, working the Unnamed Root by lantern-light, and it is the closest anyone has come to giving one of the disowned their name back. Thank you for reading it to me, $N; I did not have the stomach to wade that far alone. Beneath the working, the Glossator names where the trail runs next: north of us, past the drowned channels, stands Antiphon Pipes, where they say the wind itself argues in two voices. Take your own boat north and see it for yourself. Come back one day, if you can, and tell an old keeper of names whether the wind ever wins its argument.
