The Struck Leaf

Sit here at the brand's edge, $N, and let me show you what watching this fog has taught me. Recension Ridge revised its forbidden leaf into stone, Vellum Crater burned its own to ash, and Cryptogram Wells enciphered its leaf rather than destroy it, but the Binders who held this leaf chose a fourth way, the plainest and the cruelest: they redacted it. No revision, no fire, no cipher, only a censor's brand struck flat across whole passages until the ink simply stopped being there, and the leaf did not survive the striking so much as it dissolved under it. The fog you have been walking through is that same striking, still spreading, one stack at a time, and every pinnacle this maze has lost to open water was, I believe, a piece of the leaf the censor reached last. I believe the Last Pinnacle, the one stack still standing at the maze's far edge, carries the final unstruck words, because the Glossator swore it was the only place the brand had not yet finished its work when they had to sail on. Go and read what the censor did not get to erase.
