The Leaf Cut in Half
es_schism_sagaThe Leaf Cut in Half
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and hear the rest. This leaf held one chapter, whole, before the Binders read it: an account of a war the Book's own kings lost, written by the losing side, which is the only kind of history the Binders ever cut. They could not bear to burn a true thing, so they tried to divide it instead, and the blade that split this page split the rock beneath it too. The Glossator walked both halves in a single season, ferried across the strait on a fisherman's line, and left their aside pinned under a stone at the shelf's far end before the fisherman would row them back. I have never had the nerve to read it myself. Go and read it for me.

Completion
"A losing side still won something: the truth outlived the throne that buried it." That is the whole aside, $N, and it is the bravest thing anyone has written on this rock. Below it, in smaller letters, the Glossator names Codicil Ice, sealed under glaciers a good way further south along the apocrypha, as the next leaf on their trail. No ferry reaches it from here; take your own boat south and mind the ice at the shore. Come back and tell an old chronicler what you find under it.
