The Enciphered Leaf

Quest · Level 60

Sit here on the rim, $N, and let me show you what thirty years of reading black water has taught me. Recension Ridge revised its forbidden leaf into stone, and Vellum Crater burned its own to ash, but the Binders who held this leaf chose a third way: they enciphered it. Every letter, replaced by another, over and over, until the whole leaf read as nonsense to anyone without the key, and then they sank the enciphered page into a well and let the fen keep it, believing unreadable was as good as gone. They were nearly right. The cold light down there has kept every rim perfect for longer than anyone alive has been counting, and I have spent thirty years matching letter to letter without once finding where the pattern breaks. I believe the Unbroken Rim, the deepest well of all, still carries the whole cipher unbroken, key and all, because the Glossator swore it was the one rim they could not finish reading before they had to sail on. Go and read what the Binders trusted no one would ever break.

Completion

"[unbroken, still]" is as far as the cipher yields even now, $N, the same five words the Glossator carried away from this well before me. Whatever key would finish the reading, the Binders took it with them, and this fen has kept its half of the secret perfectly. Thank you for reading it to me; my eyes are not what they were, and the light down there plays tricks on tired ones. The trail runs on east from here, past the open water, to Blackout Pinnacles, where they say the fog itself forgets which way is up. Take your own boat east and see it for yourself. Come back one day, if you can, and tell an old lexicographer whether the fog keeps its own kind of cipher.
