The Leaf Nobody Had to Cut
es_bookworm_karst_sagaThe Leaf Nobody Had to Cut
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and hear the one part of this island's story the Binders never had to write. Every other leaf out here was cut on purpose, struck through, revised, exiled for a reason somebody once had to decide, but this leaf was never cut at all. It was simply left in a damp margin of the Book too long, forgotten rather than judged, and the neglect itself did the work a knife usually does: small things ate through it, tunnel by tunnel, until what drifted east was already more hole than page. The gardens that grow through every opening are not decoration; they are what a forgotten thing looks like once life moves in to fill the space where the words used to be. The Glossator found that unbearably sad, sadder than anything the Binders cut on purpose, because at least a cut leaf was cut for a reason. They climbed to the Canopy Gap, the highest hole clean through the whole karst, and left a note there that reads less like an argument and more like a eulogy. Go and read it.

Completion
"A leaf that is cut is remembered as a wound. A leaf that is only forgotten is remembered by nothing at all, until the worms and the moss remember it instead. I think I would rather have been cut." That is the saddest thing the Glossator has left anywhere on the trail, $N, and I have read all of it that survives. Beneath the note, the same hand: Tornleaf Canyon, further north across the palimpsest_deep, an island torn clean in two with violet twilight pooling in the gap between the halves. Take your own boat past the Canopy Gap and hold north; the current runs steady that way now. Come back and tell me whether a leaf that was torn on purpose fares any better than one the world simply forgot.
