The Line They Struck Out

Quest · Level 60

Sit, $N, and I will tell you what this reef actually is. It was one line of the Book, a single sentence the Binders judged not wrong exactly, only unnecessary: a claim so plain and so straight that arguing with it felt beneath the effort, so instead of a footnote or a revision they simply struck it through and let the stroke of ink itself wash out to sea. The strikethrough became the reef, ruler-straight because a pen drawn once in anger does not wander, bleached white because ink fades to nothing but its shape when the sea has it long enough. Every marker along the strand is a place where the stroke wavered by a hair, the only proof that a hand, not a law of the sea, drew this line. The Glossator came looking for the sentence underneath the strike, the one the Binders decided was not worth keeping but also not worth erasing outright. They left what they found, or what they could still read of it, at the Reef's End, the farthest point the stroke reaches before the ink finally gave out. Go and read it for me.

Completion

"The sentence under the strike said only: this, too, is true. I do not know why that sentence frightened anyone enough to cross it out rather than simply leave it be." That is the whole of the Glossator's note, plain as the line it was written across. Thank you, $N; I have read every other version of this reef and none of them were this honest. Underneath, they name the next leaf on the trail: Bookworm Karst, further south across the palimpsest_deep, honeycombed with tunnels like a page eaten hollow by worms. Take your own boat past the Reef's End and hold south; that current runs strong and true now. Come back and tell me what a hollowed page remembers that a struck line cannot.
