The Reed That Wrote Itself
es_calamus_shallows_sagaThe Reed That Wrote Itself
Quest · Level 32
Before this leaf was ever cut, $N, it was the Book's own proof sheet: the page where the first calamus pen was tested, line after line of the same word written over and over until the cut nib held true. The Binders decided a story should never show its own scratch work, so the proof sheet went into the cut pile, ink and reed stubble and all. It did not burn: the reeds in its margin had already taken root in the ink, and they grew into every reed on this flat, still writing the same word over and over in the mud at low tide, if you know how to read a footprint. Someone else learned to read it, and left their own proof beside the deep channel past Last Hummock: go and read what still holds against the tide.

Completion
So every reed out here has been writing the same word for longer than the mainland has had scribes to read it, $N. I am almost afraid to ask which word. The trail runs on to Uncial Tors, another leaf of the marginal isles not far past us. Reed's ferry will carry you there; ask him for the crossing.
