The Leaf That Named Its Price
es_catchword_cay_sagaThe Leaf That Named Its Price
Quest · Level 8
Long before the Bindery ruled that a story should never once mention what things cost, $N, this leaf was the Book's own price list: an appendix where the old scribes wrote down what every word, every meal, every crossing was worth. An editor on the mainland called it unliterary and struck it whole from the margin of the last draft. It should have burned with the rest of the cut pages, but the ink here had already learned to shout, and a shouting thing is hard to put out for good. It washed ashore still calling its numbers, and Sera's whole market is that same habit, generations on, a price called aloud instead of written small in a margin. Someone else found the carving before you did: go to Ledger Cove and read what the Glossator left beside it.

Completion
So that is what we have been shouting all along. A price is just a story that ends fast, $N. The trail does not stop at my ledger: the Glossator went on to Serif Holm, a chalk-cliffed leaf further out in the folios. Corin's ferry runs there the same as it runs here; ask him for the crossing.
