The Cipher Leaf
es_cipher_atoll_sagaThe Cipher Leaf
Quest · Level 60
Sit by the beacon glass, $N, and I will tell you what this ring truly is. Before the Book was bound, this leaf held a cipher: a private code the first scribes used to write what they dared not say plainly, every letter swapped for a shape only the initiated could read. The Binders judged a hidden code more dangerous than any forbidden word, since a code can hide a truth in plain sight forever and never be caught reading it, so they cut the leaf whole and let the Ink Tide carry it east. It ran aground as this ring of black sand, and the old cipher still moves in it: the reef's gaps break at the code's own intervals, and the lagoon blinks out fragments of the message every night, over and over, to no one who is listening. The Glossator spent a full season here matching the lagoon's pulses to the reef's gaps, and left their working key at the Lantern Crown before they sailed on. Go and read what they left.

Completion
"The pattern repeats every forty-one pulses, and on the forty-first it almost makes a word." That is as far as the Glossator got, by their own hand at the Lantern Crown, and it is farther than I ever got alone. Thank you for reading it back to me, $N; my eyes trace the pattern now that yours have walked it once. Below the working, the key also names where the trail runs next: south of us, past the black sand shoals, lies Rootscript Mangroves, where the Glossator says the roots themselves keep the next leaf memory. Take your own boat south and find it. Come back one day and tell an old cipher-breaker how the story reads from there.
