The Leaf They Could Not Burn
es_codicil_ice_sagaThe Leaf They Could Not Burn
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and hear the rest of it. This leaf was a whole city's chronicle, a place that stood while three of the Book's own kings rose and fell and said so plainly in its own streets, which every one of them survived reading. The Binders could not cut a page that true without the tear showing, so they did something crueler: they let it stand, and buried it under ice so deep no reader would ever reach the bottom of it. The Glossator dug for one whole summer with a delver's own tools before they found the gate, and they left their rime scraped into the ice at Calvingwatch, where the cliffs calve into the black sea, before the frost took the rest of the season from them. Go and read what they left.

Completion
"A city does not need the Book to remember it. It only needs one reader who came back." That is the whole of the rime, $N, half-melted already by the time I get there myself. Below it, scratched smaller, the Glossator names Imprimatur Cone, a burning black mountain further north along the apocrypha, as the next leaf on their trail. No ferry sails there from here: take your own boat north, and mind the smoke on the wind before you see the fire under it. Come back and tell an old archivist what still burns.
