One Line, No Paragraph
es_continua_ridge_sagaOne Line, No Paragraph
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and hear what a ridge is when it is also a sentence. This leaf held one line of the Book that the Binders judged too dangerous to ever let end: a claim, they say, that ran on and on without a single paragraph break, so that stopping to argue with it meant losing your place and starting the whole line over. Rather than cut it, they exiled it whole, and it ran aground here still unbroken, a single continuous line against the sky. No gap has ever opened in it, not in a season, not in a century; even the delvers who tried to cut one through gave up and dug along it instead. The Glossator came here looking for the line's first word, certain that a sentence with no end must have a beginning somewhere. They left their answer, or their failure to find one, carved at the Last Vertebra, the southern tip where the spine finally narrows to a point. Go and read what they found.

Completion
"I have walked the whole spine and found no first word, only more line. Either it began before the Binders existed to cut anything, or it has no beginning at all, which is a worse thought and I intend to keep having it." That is the Glossator, arguing with their own discovery in the same breath. Thank you for carrying their words to me, $N. Beneath the note, in the same hand: Undertext Citadel, further south across the palimpsest_deep, where they say a sunken tide keeps trying to erase the walls and an older city keeps showing through anyway. Take your own boat south past the Last Vertebra and keep south; that is the way the current runs now. Come back and tell me what the citadel remembers underneath.
