The Town With No First Floor
es_undertext_citadel_sagaThe Town With No First Floor
Quest · Level 60
Sit, $N, and let me tell you what a citadel is when nobody ever tears the old one down. This leaf held a passage of the Book that the Binders kept revising: a description of a city, rewritten draft after draft until the final version buried every earlier one under its own walls. Rather than pick a version to keep, the Binders exiled the whole stack of drafts together, and it ran aground here as one citadel built directly on top of itself, tier over sunken tier, with the oldest writing always the lowest and the wettest. Nobody has ever found where the first draft ends and the second begins, because nobody has ever reached the bottom. The Glossator came here trying to read the city from its foundation up, the only order that would make the revisions make sense. They left their own reading, or their failure to finish it, at the Last Undertext, past the Outer Wall, where the newest stone finally runs out. Go and read what they carved.

Completion
"I dug through eleven layers and found a twelfth beneath them, still going down, still older. A city that revises itself forever has no foundation, only more draft. I am done digging and I am not proud of stopping." That is the Glossator, admitting a limit for once. Thank you for bringing me their honesty, $N. Beneath the note, the same hand names where they sailed next: Strikethrough Reef, further south across the palimpsest_deep, a single line of coral struck clean across the sea for miles. Take your own boat past the Last Undertext and hold your course south; that is the way the current favors now. Come back and tell me what a single unbroken line remembers that a citadel of endless revisions cannot.
