The Leaf Written Over

Quest · Level 60
Sit close, $N; the wind carries better than my voice does now. This key was a page of glosses once, explanations for words too old to stand on their own, and when the Binders needed room for a cleaner draft they did not throw the page away. They scraped it and wrote new glosses over the old ones, and did that again, and again, until the notches you see everywhere are a dozen drafts pressed into one groove. The wind does not read any single layer. It reads all of them at once, which is why no two stacks ever whistle the same note. The Glossator came here chasing the oldest layer underneath, the one they said still remembered the word before it had a meaning. They left their own note scored into the stone at the Last Whistle, out past the Tally Stack, where the wind runs loudest. Go and read what they carved.

Completion
"Under every gloss is another gloss, and under the last one is the word with no explanation left. I have not found it. I am not sure the Binders left it here at all." That is the Glossator's own hand, unmistakable: certain of the question, honest about not having the answer. Thank you for reading it to an old woman's ears, $N. The carving beneath their note names where they went next: Continua Ridge, further south across the palimpsest_deep, where they say the whole spine of the island is one unbroken line with never a gap in it. Take your own boat out past the Last Whistle and follow the wind south; it runs that way now more often than not. Come back and tell me what the ridge remembers.
