The Failed Trial
es_vellum_crater_sagaThe Failed Trial
Quest · Level 60
Sit a moment on the glass, $N, and let me show you what I have pieced together. Before the Book was bound, every new chapter was brought here first, to be held to the crater's own heat, because the Binders trusted fire to test a draft the way they never fully trusted each other. A chapter that held its ink through the heat was bound. A chapter that failed, that ran or blistered or simply would not hold, was not saved and argued over: it was let to burn completely, and the ash went into the inner sea, where centuries of heat have fused every failure into the black glass under your boots. I believe this leaf, the one the Binders call the forbidden chapter, was tested here and did not survive its own trial, on purpose, because they wanted it gone rather than merely hidden. The Glossator walked the Boiling Strand before me and swore the truest fragments of the failure still lie there, fused where the fire left them. Go and read what the crater kept of a chapter that was never meant to be bound.

Completion
"[the failure, mid-burn]" is fused plain into the glass at the Boiling Strand, $N, words caught the instant the fire took them, because the Binders let the whole draft burn rather than risk anyone reading what it said before it failed. The Glossator recorded the same fragment in their own notes, and guessed the chapter had failed its trial on purpose, not by accident. Thank you for reading it to me; the heat down there is more than an old chronicler's knees can manage twice. The trail runs on north from here, past the open water, to Cryptogram Wells, where they say the wells themselves glow with an old, cold light. Take your own boat north and see what the crater's neighbor kept of its own failures. Come back and tell me whether a well keeps its secrets as poorly as a crater does.
