The Sealed Wedge

Quest · Level 60
Sit here and watch the dust for a while, $N; it never sits still, and neither should you get too comfortable. This leaf was a single word once, a tablet the Book used to press one exact meaning into every reader who touched it. The Binders feared a word that strong more than any whole chapter, so they sealed it shut before they even cut it loose, wedge marks folded in on themselves so the word could never be pressed out again. When it ran aground here, the wind kept trying anyway, spinning devils that write half the word and lose it, gully after gully, forever almost saying it. The Glossator found the Sealed Wedge and could not open it either. What they left behind is not the word. It is a question: is a meaning still a meaning if it can never be read again.

Completion
You read their question, and I have pressed wax to that seal a hundred times without an answer either. Maybe a meaning that can never be read is not a meaning at all; maybe that is exactly why the Binders feared it. The trail moves on regardless, north across open water, to Ostraca Shoals, where they say broken pottery washes up inscribed with words that were never whole to begin with. No ferry sails that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course north and go. If the shoals ever finish a single word, come back and press it into wax for me.
