The Last Unbroken Piece
es_ostraca_shoals_sagaThe Last Unbroken Piece
Quest · Level 60
Sit among the sherds a while, $N, and try not to cut yourself finding a seat. This leaf was a single letter once, written large enough that the Binders could not simply strike it out; it needed a whole leaf, because that one letter would have changed the sense of every letter around it if it had stayed in the Book. So they cut it out whole, and rather than let one dangerous letter drift east intact, they shattered it into pieces too small for any single shard to be read as the letter it was. Every fragment on this island is a stroke or a curve of that one letter, scattered too far apart to ever fit back together. The Glossator spent longer here than at any other leaf, laying shard against shard, and at the Great Jar left the one piece they never dared move: the only fragment still large enough to hint at the letter's original shape, if you know how to look at it.

Completion
You looked at it, and I will not pretend I know what letter it was any more than you do; I have looked at that piece for longer than I care to admit. Whatever the Binders were so afraid one letter could say, they made very sure no single shard could say it alone. The trail moves on regardless, south across open water, to Pumicestone Glacier, where they say the ice has scoured a whole island smooth as a scraped page. No ferry sails that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course south and go. If the ice remembers a shape, come back and tell an old scholar what it was.
