The Chapter That Faced Itself
es_diptych_sagaThe Chapter That Faced Itself
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and hear the rest. This leaf showed whoever read it not their own reflection but the reader standing opposite them, whatever secret that second reader carried, mirrored back whole. Two people could never safely read it together, and one person alone could never read it at all. The Binders split it clean down the middle into two exact mirror halves and sealed one on each of these two peaks, certain no one would ever stand close enough to both halves at once to complete it. The Glossator crossed the hinge between the two faces a hundred times over a whole frozen season, carrying half a sentence at a time from one peak to the other in memory alone, until they had matched every mirrored word, and left what they had matched here at the hinge before the ice took their fingers. Go and read what crossing gave back.

Completion
"A mirror held up to a mirror finally shows you something true: not yourself, and not the other, but the space between." That is the whole of the crossing, $N, matched half by half over a hundred trips no one else has ever made. Below it, in a hand nearly too frost-bitten to read, the Glossator names Stele Plateau, a windswept highland further north along the apocrypha, as the final leaf on this trail before the chapter closes. No ferry sails there from here: take your own boat north, and hold onto your hat. Come back and tell an old keeper whether the wind ever stopped.
