The Chapter That Burned in Sunlight
es_loupeglass_dunes_sagaThe Chapter That Burned in Sunlight
Quest · Level 60
Sit again, $N, and hear the rest. This leaf held words that burned whoever read them by direct light of day, not as a manner of speaking: the ink itself was cut to catch fire the moment true sunlight touched it, so it could only ever be read by lamplight, in secret, at night. The Binders would not risk a page that dangerous surviving in one piece, so they melted it into the sand here and let the noon sun scatter its words across every wandering spot of fire this glass throws, certain no one would ever stand inside enough of those spots at once to read a single whole sentence. The Glossator spent a whole burning season chasing the spots from dune to dune, holding still in each one just long enough to catch a scattered word, until they had gathered enough to almost complete the sentence, and left what they had caught here when the season finally turned before their reading did. Go and read what the light gave up.

Completion
"A sentence built from stolen light is still a sentence, word by scattered word." That is the whole of the refraction, $N, more of that burned page than anyone alive has ever held in one place at once. Below it, in a hand scorched pale at the edges, the Glossator names The Diptych, two ice-locked peaks further north along the apocrypha, as the next leaf on their trail. No ferry sails there from here: take your own boat north, and dress warm, because nothing about this island will have prepared you for it. Come back and tell an old keeper what froze first, you or the reading.
