What the Grass Grew Over
es_geoglyph_downs_sagaWhat the Grass Grew Over
Quest · Level 60
Sit on the turf a while, $N, and try not to see a shape in the grass; you will anyway, everyone does. This leaf was a picture book once, every figure the Book meant to illustrate its stories with, cut into the chalk so the pictures could never be erased by ink or fire. The Binders cut this leaf away not because the pictures were wrong, but because nobody after the first printing could agree what story any of them illustrated, and an illustration nobody can read is worse to them than none at all. When it ran aground here, the grass grew back over most of the lines within a generation, and every figure since has been half a guess. The Glossator walked every ridge on this island trying to match a figure to a story from the Book they still remembered, and failed at every one. What they left at the Nameless Figure is not a note. It is a question about which story goes with which shape, left for whoever comes next to try where they could not.

Completion
You read their question, and I am no closer to answering it than they were. Maybe no figure here ever illustrated anything; maybe that is the point the Binders could not forgive. The trail runs on regardless, south across open water to Elision Arches, where they say a whole arch fell in the middle and the two halves still reach for each other over open air. No ferry crosses that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course south and go. If the arches remember which story goes with a shape, come back and draw it for me.
