The Clearest Print

Quest · Level 60
Stand a while at the Clearest Print, $N, and look down instead of out. This is the last leaf of this chapter, and it closes it strangely: every other leaf we have found was a page the Binders worked to erase, cut, shatter, or write over. This one was never a page at all. It was read aloud once, in a city that stood here before the water rose over it, and the words were never written down anywhere the Binders could reach. Water remembers what ink cannot: not the shape of a letter, but the shape of everything a voice moved through when it spoke, walls and streets and squares included, all of it holding the print of a sentence the Binders never got the chance to silence, because it was never on a page to begin with. The Glossator came here last of anyone and found the one place the water sits calm and clear enough, at the right hour, to see the whole print at once instead of in pieces.

Completion
You saw the whole print at once, and I still do not know what that sentence was, only that it was never written, never bound, and never within the Binders' reach at all. That may be why this chapter ends here: everything else we found was a page they controlled. This was a voice they never could. The trail moves on regardless, into open water further north, past where any leaf could be written or drowned, to a stretch the charts call the Ellipsis Cays, where they say the Book itself falls silent for a while, page after page of nothing at all. No ferry sails that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course north and go. If you find out what a silence like that is hiding, come back and tell an old scholar.
