The Deepest Scratch
es_waxtablet_plateau_sagaThe Deepest Scratch
Quest · Level 60
Sit a while at the Palimpsest Furrow, $N, where the wax runs deepest. This leaf was never cut away, shattered, or ground to nothing like some of its neighbors; the Binders did something quieter here. They smoothed a fresh skin of wax directly over the passage they feared and wrote a different message on top of it, one dull enough that nobody paging through the Book would ever think to look beneath it. The old words are still down there, whole, pressed into the tablet's own body, buried under a truth nobody suspects hides anything at all. Warm wax telegraphs, though, if the top layer is thin enough and the day is warm enough: the old impression rises just barely toward the surface before the new layer settles back over it. The Glossator found the one furrow where the overwritten skin runs thinnest, worn by wind and years, until the deepest scratch beneath it barely, briefly, shows through.

Completion
You saw it rise and settle again, and I still could not read a single word of what was underneath, only that something is there, whole, waiting under a lie thin enough to see through if you know where to press. Whatever the Binders wrote over that passage, they made it convincing enough that nobody would think to warm the wax and look. The trail keeps moving regardless, further north across open water, to Ghostprint Atoll, where they say the sea itself has kept an outline no ink ever needed to touch. No ferry sails that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course north and go. If the water still holds that outline, come back and tell an old scholar what shape it traces.
