The Glossary Leaf
es_gloss_key_sagaThe Glossary Leaf
Quest · Level 10
Sit, $N, and I will tell it the way my grandmother told it to me. Before the Book was bound, this key was its glossary: the leaf at the back where the first scribes wrote down what the hard words of the sea meant. Tide, shoal, gaff, the name of every fish and every knot, each with its own small explanation. The Binders cut it out. A world worth reading, they said, should not need its words explained, so they tore the leaf away and let the Ink Tide carry it east. It ran aground here as a sickle of sand, and at low water you can still see the old definitions ripple across the bay floor. The Glossator lived among us for one whole season, learning every word, and left a note out at Footnote Point before they sailed. Go and read it for me.

Completion
"Every hard word here was once explained. The rest of the Book was never so kind. I am going to find the pages it lost." That is the Glossator, all right: always one more page. Thank you, $N; my eyes gave up on small hands years ago. Below that, the note names the next leaf on the trail: Leafturn Isle, a long way south of us along the near folios, where they say the orchards turn their leaves like pages. Have Osk ring the bell for you: the ferry takes you back to the mainland docks, and the ferry masters there sail on to Leafturn. Follow the trail, and come back one day to tell an old man how the story ends.
