The Dot That Grew a Lake
es_tittle_isle_sagaThe Dot That Grew a Lake
Quest · Level 10
Long before the near folios were anything but blank margin, $N, this leaf held the proofreader's own marks: how to dot an i, where a comma bends a sentence, when to strike a line and start again. It was the Book teaching its own scribes how to write it, and some editor on the mainland decided that a story explaining its own punctuation stops being a story and starts being a lesson. The mark meant for the foot of this very leaf, the small dot that was only ever supposed to sit above one letter, came away round and whole instead of small, and grew into the lake at our heart while the cut leaf grew a green rim around it, the way a wet cup leaves a ring on a page. We have grazed that ring for longer than anyone counts. Someone else came through and left their own mark at The Dot, looking down on the lake that never should have been more than a point: go and read it.

Completion
So the lake really is just an oversized point, set down where a single small mark was meant to go. That is either the smallest story in the whole Book or the largest piece of punctuation anyone ever bound, $N, and I have never once decided which. The trail runs on to Gloss Key, another leaf of the near folios not far past us. Cobb's ferry will carry you there; ask him for the crossing.
