The Chapter Printed a Thousand Times

This leaf was the very first page the Book ever held, the one every other page after it was cast to match, and losing it would have unmade the shape of every copy since. The Binders could not bring themselves to burn the one page that gave every other page its shape, so instead they printed it wrong on purpose, a thousand times over, in broken type and smudged ink, until no one still living could tell the true casting from the counterfeits scattered through this jungle. The Glossator spent a whole grey season pulling failed proofs out of the vines at Foundry Hollow, one broken casting at a time, until they found the single page that finally matched, and left their proof of it here when their eyes gave out before their patience did.
