The Confessed Leaf

Quest · Level 60

Sit by the nearest vent, $N, and wait for the steam to rise before I tell you what this island is confessing. Before the Book was bound, this leaf held a written confession: someone with the power to bind the whole world admitted, in their own hand, to a single wrongdoing they could not undo. The Binders could not let that confession stand, because if the Binders could confess to being wrong once, every reader would wonder what else deserved doubting, so rather than destroy the leaf outright, they tried to boil the guilt out of it, sinking it into these springs to let the heat carry the words away for good. It never quite worked. The leaf became this island, and the springs still confess in fits: the steam writes fragments of the same admission across the white sinter whenever a vent rises, and forgets them again the moment the vent falls quiet, over and over, never once finishing the sentence. The Glossator sat here through a dozen risings and swore they had finally read the confession whole at the vent they marked the Quiet Script, before the steam took it back one last time. Go there and see what is left to read.

Completion

"[the confession, whole, for one held breath]" is as much as the Glossator ever wrote down before the steam took even their own note back, marked at the Quiet Script in a hand already fading when I found it. Thank you for going to read what is left of it, $N; I have sat beside that vent for years and it has never once waited for me. Beneath the fading ink, the Glossator still names the next leaf on the trail: south of us, past the Quiet Script's own rise, stand the Portent Arches, where they say the fog itself carries omens through the stone. Take your own boat south and see what it carries. Come back one day, if the steam allows it, and tell an old reader whether an omen is any more patient than a confession.
