The Gloss Between

Interlinear, $N, means written between the lines: a gloss, a note squeezed into the margin because there was nowhere else left for it. This whole island is the Binders' own gloss on the Book, cut loose and sent east because it kept trying to comment on pages the Book had already finished saying. I have spent years reading the strata like text, band by band, mesa by mesa, and I still cannot tell you what it is glossing. Out past Redstrike, in the narrowest slot on the whole island, hardly wide enough to walk, someone left their own note wedged into the rock, signed only as the Glossator. Walk out to that gloss between the mesas and read what they made of it.
